This Trastevere Bar Is A Welcoming Spot To Recharge

When the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome is waking up, this bar is a welcoming and friendly spot to enjoy a cappuccino and fresh pastry and much more!

Trastevere Bar - Seating Inside and Outside

Hidden on a cobblestone street just steps from the Piazza Trilussa, Bar del Cinque is a charming caffè that offers a blend of the morning coffee needs with the afternoon and evening cocktail needs of their visitors. This Trastevere bar was inaugurated in the post-war period, in times of rebirth and reconstruction.

This Bar del Cinque is the ideal place for those who want to spend an evening in the heart of Trastevere, enjoying a classic aperitif with a buffet in Rome Trastevere. It is also ready for you early in the morning offering a wide selection of pastries and foods to pair with their delicious coffee.

Trastevere Bar - Period furnishings

This bar is so special and inviting that in 2011, Nanni Moretti chose the Bar del Cinque as the setting for some scenes of “Habemus Papam” along with Michel Piccoli in the role of a newly elected Pope, overwhelmed by the weight of responsibility.

The Bar’s Atmosphere And Design

The bar has a bit of a retro feeling both with the furniture and with the artwork that adorns the walls. The tables were largely marble topped with an iron structure holding it up. There was an ancient coffee grinder along with framed prints on the walls that seemed to originate pre-war.

There is indoor and outdoor seating that was available even before the posted opening time. Three or four tables outside were relaxing next to the greenery climbing the walls. The bar is on the edge of an intersection of a couple small streets, so you won’t get a claustrophobic feeling that cars or people are going to climb all over you. You can easily relax and just watch the passers-by.

The location of the bar is quite close to Piazza Trilussa, and somewhat on the edge of Trastevere. It is a short walk from the Tiber, so convenient from both Trastevere and from the Centro.

Menu Highlights Of Bar Del Cinque

Our focus, as always, is on coffee and breakfast. For this, they happily offer a full range of espresso drinks and tea. You can either drink your coffee at the bar or get table service inside or outside. In addition to the coffee, they offered freshly baked cornetti and saccottini and a smattering of others. We got a saccottini and Ciambella, which were both fresh and in the case of the saccottini, right from the oven.

Although we don’t typically talk about things not related to coffee, it is worth noting that this bar is also active in the evening with a great selection of cocktails, spirits and wines. This cocktail bar is known for its specialty, The Mojito, which is prepared with care and attention by expert and professional baristi.

Trastevere Bar - Breakfast

Practical Information For Tourists

We ordered at the bar and just sat down. Like most table service, you pay after enjoying the meal. If you choose to drink at the bar, I suspect you also pay afterwards, but I was able to confirm it on this visit.

The Saturday morning that we arrived was a quiet one, and given the tranquility of the neighborhood, I would expect an early morning visit wouldn’t be met with much of a crowd. Late mornings would be a different story for coffee and evenings are most certainly a busy time for cocktails.

Trastevere Bar - More Breakfast

By choosing to sit at a table, we did expect to pay a premium. For a cappuccino and a pastry, we each paid €5, which was pretty reasonable by comparison to other bars in a more touristy area.

Special Features Of The Bar

I don’t know if this counts as a special feature, but unlike almost every other bar in Rome in which we’ve enjoyed an espresso, this one sells merchandise. Specifically, they have t-shirts for sale inside at the bar going for €12. There are also branded gadgets and water bottles.

Navigating the Visit

This bar is very easy to find when you are starting at Piazza Trilussa. If you are coming from the other side of the Tiber, cross at Ponte Sisto and you will be right there. Here is a good map to follow:

This type of bar will certainly have local patrons, but it is popular with tourists visiting and staying in the Trastevere neighborhood. Because of this, if you are worried about your Italian skills, don’t be concerned. The friendly staff will help you order in English.

What Is Trastevere Famous For?

The Trastevere district in Rome is known for its charming cobblestone streets, vibrant nightlife and overabundance of restaurants and wine bars. This area in particular entertains a younger client with John Cabot University being close by.

Trastevere Bar - Old Coffee Grinder And Books

Why This Caffè Is Worth A Visit

The reality is that this bar is not dissimilar to many popular coffee bars in Rome. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh and the coffee is delicious. Because of this, if you are in the neighborhood, you should definitely stop by for breakfast. If you are across town, you can probably find something just as enjoyable a little closer to you.
