Coffee Quiz With Flavor Of Italy (4th Edition)

Next up is well-known expert on Italy, Wendy, who agreed to do our 4th edition of the coffee quiz with Flavor of Italy. I discovered her some time ago on Instagram and have been following her ever since. One of my favorite posts, of course, involved coffee. She’s lived in Rome for years and loves to share its secrets!

While her site includes lots of tips about what to do while in Rome, the focus is also on Italian food and what could be better than that??  There are recipes but she also arranges food tours, trips and cooking classes.  You can reach her at flavorofitaly@gmail.com if you want to arrange something for the next time you’re in bella Roma, she loves to help folks get just what they need from a tour, trip or class.

Below is a recent favorite of mine from her site and socials, Ciambellone.  Yes please!

Tell us about your morning coffee routine. For instance, what time do you have your first cup of coffee or espresso? How do you make it? Do you take milk or sweetener? Do you drink it before you officially start your day or do you have it as you’re already starting to get things done? Is it a solo or shared experience?

I have my first espresso as soon as I get up. I heat up a cup of whole milk and add two shots of dark roast espresso to that. No sugar. Without that morning routine my day starts off badly! Then I usually go out for another espresso in our local bar with my husband.

Generally that is the end of my coffee for the day unless I’m out for lunch or out with friends and then I might add another espresso, sometimes decaf, and always macchiato. Never with foam.

How much coffee do you drink in a normal day?

  • ☑️ 1-2 cups
  • 3 cups
  • 4 cups
  • 5 cups
  • Too many to count!

In your experience, which country has the best coffee? Why?

Unquestionably Italy! It’s all in how they roast their coffee, and then how they prepare it!

When did you start drinking coffee regularly?

  • In my teens
  • ☑️ In my 20s
  • In my 30s
  • In my 40s or later

Do you have any favorite facts or stories about coffee you’d like to share?

I love how important coffee is to Italians and how each person has a personal twist to a coffee order, right down to the kind of cup to serve it in. And specialized orders don’t phase the barista in Italy; in fact they have memorized every individual’s coffee preference!

Do you have any projects that you’d like to highlight?

I’m currently working on two Italian cookbooks and getting ready to launch a podcast with a US-based partner. And stay tuned for Flavor of Italy’s weeklong food and photography trip to Puglia in May 2020!
